Kenyan Orphan Gets Home In Chocolate City With New Music Deal

Kenyan rapper Qritiqal has found a new home in Nigerian based music label Chocolate City.

He joins fellow countrymate, Victoria Kimani on the label after years of hustling to make a name for him self in the Kenyan music arena.

He was welcomed into the label by the CEO and Nigerian megastar, M.I Abaga who posted on his Instagram account saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, Chocolate City Kenya is proud to announce to you our newest Kenyan signing!!!"

The announcement was made on the Qritiqal's birthday. Sweeeetttt!

Qritical - real name Eric Onyango Omollo - lost both his parents at the cusp of his teen years, he turned to music as a cathartic expression of deep seated feelings no one should endure at such a young age.

Born in 1989 and raised in Mombasa Kenya, he ventured into music through school festivals. He hung out with local artistes who mentored him through his personal struggles, including the loss of one of his siblings, as he passionately pursued music as both therapeutic and a career path.

After a chance meeting with Gyptian at a local show, he was inspired to record original material and debuted in 2010 as a sensational dance hall artiste with the single “Weak Inside” - a nation-wide hit. The single won him the Best Video of the Year 2010 at the Nzumari Awards and the Best Video of The Year Coast Music Awards.

In 2012, he dropped another hit single "Kupe" where he was featured by Ogopa Deejayz Artist and Guru Col. Mustafa.

Having also shared a stage with the likes of Jaguar and Sauti Sol, he decided it was time for him to pause and develop his own unique sound, later on meeting and collaborating with local producer, Motif_On_The_Beat (Morris Kobia).

Their collaboration produced successful DJ Dubplates for local DJs, at a time when he also doubled as a jingle maker for some advertisement agencies.

His consistency and passion for music developed Qritiqal’s signature sound; a go between dancehall, soul and R&B, where his high tenor range, in contrast with his laid back delivery gives him a unique tone and flow.

This had him handpicked for the theme song of Kenya's legendary DJ Joe Mfalme. Still, success and the right attention seemed to elude him as he kept doing pro bono gigs while trying his best to cater for his younger brother and only surviving family member.

He eventually settled in Nairobi – the music capital of Kenya, where he was discovered by Chocolate City Music Kenya, the sister company to Chocolate City Music Nigeria; home to internationally known acts like Ice Prince Zamani, Koker and MI Abaga. Get ready Africa, it’s about to get Qritiqal.

Radio personality and social activist Adelle Onyango calls for action against violence in relationships

Popular radio personality Adelle Onyangi has added her voice to the ongoing tragedy that saw a Kenyatta University graduate stabbed by her ex boyfriend.
Edinald Atieno Nyainda is said to have had an argument with 36-year-old ex-military officer Maxwell Ochieng, after breaking up with him.
Ochieng stabbed her 10 times in the chest and neck before attempting to kill himself using the same knife, according to various media reports.
Adelle who has on numerous ocassions championed a social campaign against violence said it is about time the conversation on relationships and violence is addressed.
"We have normalised violence even in relationships," Adelle said, "When someone slaps you once, you rationalise it. You say, 'He was just in a bad mood'. When women cut off parts of a man's private organs, we turn that into a joke on social media."
She continued, "It is about time we had that conversation about relationships. Find out what is normal and what isn't."
Adelle believes that violence against any gender is wrong.
The charismatic radio star hopes, the ex-military boyfriend who is now facing charges for allegedly stabbing the girlfriend 10 times will also get "help because he needs it."

À tous nos amis, Koffi files et Koffillettes: Suite à L'INJUSTICE QUE SUBIT NOTRE ARTISTE KOFFI OLOMIDE, QUI VIENT D'ÊTRE TRANSMIS EN PRISON Sans-Condamnation-Prononcée, NI VERDICT DU JUGEMENT ET LE REFUS PAR LE PROCUREUR D'ÉCOUTER LA DANSEUSE SUPPOSÉE ÊTRE LA VICTIME, NOUS VOUS PRIONS DE METTRE, CETTE PHOTO DE NOTRE ARTISTE SUR TOUS, VOS COMPTES RÉSEAUX SOCIAUX EN SIGNE DE PROTESTATION ET SURTOUT DE SOUTIENT POUR L'ARTISTE
KOFFI OLOMIDE.

Socialite Huddah Monroe Apologizes for Insinuating Vera Sidika Is HIV Positive

Kenyan socialite, Huddah Monroe has had to apologize for a foot in mouth moment.

Last week Huddah insinuated that fellow controversial socialite is HIV positive. This was not taken well by fans who called her out on this. Seems the fans got to her.

In an Instagram post Huddah apologized.

She wrote, "I really want to APOLOGIZE to you my Bosses and kindly allow me to explain myself about my snap chat the other day on HIV/AIDS. I really hope you find it In your hearts to forgive me if anything I said was misunderstood."

She continued, "You all know I'm like the first Public Figure every morning of WORLD/AIDS day in Kenya who shares her results and urges the youth to go get tested. I always create awareness, letting people know it's always good to know about their status and that they shouldn't be scared. I have never been a DISCRIMINATIVE person. If you are healthy it doesn't mean you are special. GOD gives and God takes. And as long as you are SEXUALLY active you are bound to contract HIV. Condoms burst. So someone somewhere shouldn't make themselves look GOOD by putting words into my mouth and Making me look like i am inhuman. The only reason I said people should get tested instead of insulting others for being skinny is because It hurts when people think every skinny person or petite person is suffering from something. The anger of that made me mad and that's why I said people should go get tested Coz Theres rumors of them out here. The youth and the elderly need to know Being fat doesn't mean you are healthy and being skinny doesn't mean you are sick . Calling others skinny is discriminating too. People should go out and get their health Checked before calling others names. If you find out you are negative, live carefully and if you find out you are positive it's not the end of the world. People live for over 20years and more and look healthier than most of us."

She concluded the long post with "HIV /AIDS is manageable for years and NO ONE has the right to DISCRIMINATE!"

Jazz Enthusiasts, Please Keep Calm! Hugh Masekela Will Be In Town For Safaricom Jazz Lounge Concert

Jazz lovers will be in for a treat when globally acclaimed South African jazz maestro Hugh Masekela takes the stage at the Safaricom Jazz Lounge, scheduled for Friday 12th August.

While the two-time Grammy Award nominee is not new to Kenya, this will be his first appearance at the Safaricom Jazz Lounge, which is one of a series of events that lead up to the annual Safaricom International Jazz Festival.

"It will be exciting to perform for the emerging Jazz community in Kenya, which is slowly building a reputation as a notable addition to the continent's jazz circuit," said Mr. Masekela.

Masekela – who was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1968 for Best Contemporary Pop Performance (Instrumental) for his album Grazin' in the Grass – has released over 40 albums in a career spanning over 60 years, in that time working with numerous artists in the USA, Africa and Europe including Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Dizzy Gillespie, Otis Redding, Harry Belafonte and Herb Alpert among others.

The now 77-year-old composer, singer and instrumentalist received another Grammy nomination in 2011 for his critically acclaimed album Jabulani. He released his latest album – Playing @ Work – in 2013.

"We are honored to be hosting the one of the most influential African Jazz musicians; a man who has not only played an integral role in advancing Afro – Jazz music on the world stage but also showed the world the role of music in bringing social change," said Bob Collymore, CEO, Safaricom.

Proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to the Ghetto Classics music programme based in Korogocho. Ghetto Classics has been supported by the Safaricom International Jazz Festival since 2014 and has so far received over KES 19 million, funds that have gone towards the purchase of music instruments and training of over 500 children from the slum and its environs.

"This year, in partnership with the Art of Music, which runs Ghetto Classics, we hope to scale up the programme to reach more talented kids in Kisumu and Mombasa," said Mr. Collymore.

The Safaricom Jazz Lounge will be preceded by the Safaricom Jazz Night, which will be held at the Hotel Intercontinental on 28th July 2016. A new addition to the corporate's jazz calendar, the event will kick off a series of monthly jazz concerts that will give Kenyan jazz musicians a platform to showcase their talent while at the same time meeting growing demand for quality live music performances.

Three bands selected from a round of competitive auditions will perform at the inaugural Jazz Night: Nairobi Horns Project, Mwai and The Truth and Shamsi Music.

"We decided to introduce monthly jazz nights to give a chance to more jazz musicians to perform for music fans, as we realised that there is a lot of talent that should be celebrated all year round and not just at the annual festival in February," said Mr. Collymore.

"There is also a lot of interest from up-and-coming jazz musicians from other African countries who would like to perform at the Jazz Festival, so to accommodate them we plan to feature them in the monthly shows," said Mr. Collymore.

The first edition of the Safaricom International Jazz Festival was held in February 2014 and was headlined by New-York based Cameroonian artist Richard Bona

Sammy has objected to the blanket declarations that are directed at all cops.

In a Facebook post he says, "I have never, and I mean never ever been bribed. Neither have I solicited for a Bribe. I have never participated in corruption, neither have I even for a moment used my Police Status to harass, torture in any way or Kill an innocent Kenyan or any other person for that matter"

He continues, "I have been diligently serving the Citizens of Kenya with unmatched patriotism for many years under the oath of allegiance which I took upon my Graduation.

"There are thousands of other Police officers like me around the country, whose Fidelity to the law is unquestionable. Strathmore Lecturer Explains Logic Behind Quoting Kendrick Lamar In Exam Question

It has become the most popular exam question in Kenya. It was shared on all social media platforms minutes after Strathmore University Students sat for it.

The virality of the exam question is hinged on the fact that featured a quote from hip hop mega star Kendrick Lamar.

The exam paper was for a business ethics class. The first question read: "If you get your first big cheque and you cop a chain before you buy a house. You're a vanity slave." In this song, "Vanity Slave," Mr Lamar speaks openly about mindless consumerism. Explain three dangers of consumerism.

Now, the lecturer who wrote the exam has explained why he used popular culture as a tool to examine his students.

"My students who are millennials do listen to hip-hop and I thought since we had covered the topic why not just surprise them with something they can relate with," Caleb Kandagor, an assistant lecturer in philosophy and ethics at Strathmore told Reuters.

Adding, "Probably they had listened to the song before and never given it a thought. It is a question they will remember for a lifetime. For me it is about making ethics real."

Eva Longoria And Trevor Noah Award Winners of Ksh 100M Fund To Help Save The World

The Venture, luxury whisky Chivas Regal's search to find and support the most innovative startups from across the world, rewarded five social enterprises the remaining share of their $1million annual fund at their Final Event in New York City.  The winners were announced after five grand finalists pitched in front of a live audience and judging panel that included actress and philanthropist Eva Longoria.

The event was the culmination of the second year of Chivas' The Venture, which received over 2,500 applications from scalable and sustainable social entrepreneurs. The evening was hosted by The Daily Show presenter, Trevor Noah who applauded all five entrepreneurs that pitched on their commitment to using business as a force for good. The judging panel which included Eva Longoria, Donald Shah, Joe Huff and Alexandre Ricard, assessed each business based on their ability to create sustainable change through a viable business model and potential to scale.

Social startup Conceptos Plásticos from Colombia was awarded the largest contribution from The Venture fund, receiving $300,000. Focusing on transforming plastic waste into construction material for permanent housing, Conceptos Plásticos creates much needed building materials for communities to establish a physical infrastructure. Eva Longoria congratulated each of the winners on the night:

"I was really inspired by the finalists tonight – I'm so grateful there are people in the world who can figure out solutions to complex global problems. We all live in a global community and I absolutely believe social entrepreneurship is the only way we can create positive change. The caliber of the 27 finalists, their business ideas and fresh thinking was amazing."

The Final Event was attended by a range of high profile entrepreneurs, business leaders and influencers from New York City and beyond. Also in the audience was Golden Globe nominated actor Oscar Isaac who starred in Chivas Regal's Win The Right Way film, which was aired to the 300-strong audience at the beginning of the night.

Pernod Ricard's Chairman and CEO, and The Venture judge, Alexandre Ricard, said:

"It was truly a privilege to be part of the judging panel and watch the five finalists pitch for the remaining $750,000 of funding. Businesses like Conceptos Plásticos and WeFarm are great examples of how innovative, passionate and forward-thinking the social entrepreneurship movement is. Chivas is proud to support the global community of businesses that are on a mission to make a positive change in the world – I look forward to seeing the impact of these projects in the future."

Larry Madowo Pens Sacarstic Birthday Message While Taking Pot Shots At Online Trolls

Kenya's popular TV face, Larry Madowo celebrates his birthday today. The NTV news anchor celebrated turning a year older by looking back to his naive young days.

Larry Madowo took to his Instagram and penned a long post about his achievements or lack thereof...

He wrote:
"I got my first job on TV when I was just 20, a wide-eyed, skinny village boy with big city dreams who had just dropped out from Daystar because my accent had not caught up. On this my birthday it has hit me how little I have achieved in the years since: I remain unmarried and keep no small animals. Growing up in front of the camera contained all the excitement of a root canal without the motivation of a pretty dentist. I was taken apart for being too skinny, too dumb, too ugly, too basic to be worthy of the high office of reading aloud on television. But I rambled on, thanks to an abundance of wine and good humour. Seeing as I am severely lacking in the skills or talents department, I stuck around and somehow managed to fail up to a moderately acceptable career in broadcast. Now with 30 dangerously close, the internet still disapproves of how I look, how I sound; even how I breathe. Mercifully, I'm old enough not to care. After all, we live in a world where anyone can grow up to become anything, including a failure. Those types usually lurk in online comment sections, compensating for their disillusionment with life by attacking others. Here's to judgement by strangers, here's to wanderlust, here's to unmerited favour and blessings, here's to living the dream. Next time, please send money instead but thanks for all the birthday wishes ‪#‎TBT‬"

Larry Madowo Bids Farewell To His Radio Career

After the restructuring at Nation Media Group, many journalists lost their jobs.

The media giant is repositioning itself to get into the digital space.

This saw the company merge NTV and QTV and take all the radio stations online.

TV personality Larry Madison had a show on Nation FM but after the adoption of the new strategy.

He bid farewell to that part of his career in a social media post.

Read it here....

"My shiny forehead and I had the privilege of hosting The Larry Madowo Show on Nation FM over the last 2 years. Alongside @danielweke, @shoseoyalo and @eddiebutita we helped dumb down humanity by laughing much too loudly and saying nothing important. Nation FM rewarded us by giving us a Saturday morning slot and throwing in an extra hour. We only enjoyed our move to radio suburbia for 3 weeks but it was raucous messy and glorious. The Nation Media Group has changed its broadcast strategy and we have to bid adieu to this beloved station. This was one of the highlights of my week and I'm forever grateful for the opportunity. Special thanks to Manwa Magoma who gave me the show, Tim Oriedo who let me keep it as well as Jimmy Gathu and Sean Cardovillis who kept it on. In my first 2 weeks, Prince Nesta patiently taught me how to operate the console and software without once mentioning how dumb I was. That's how you know he's a nice person. I couldn't have done it without Shose, Eddie, DP & all the guests who dropped in on us. Most of all, thank you for listening."
