SAUTI ZA BUSARA OVERCOME SPONSORSHIP CHALLENGES
Sauti za Busara faces a drop in corporate sponsorship this year, its 10th anniversary, but vows to continue making each festival better than the last.
Because Sauti za Busara is run by Busara Productions, an NGO, funds gained from entrance to the festival and merchandise sales are non-profit. Busara hires and trains Zanzibaris for festival work with skills that will help them gain employment throughout the year. Busara remains firm in keeping the festival affordable for fans. Ticket prices for Tanzanian citizens remain at just 3,000/-TSH per day, a little under $2.00 USD.
The festival largely relies on corporate generosity to fund the festival. This year, donations fell short by nearly 30% of the expected budget. In spite of that, Sauti za Busara presses forward in order to provide an exciting and meaningful festival that focuses on quality not just quantity. Festival Director Yusuf Mahmoud says that the festival is not about money or how big it can get. Rather it’s about showcasing Tanzania and Zanzibar and giving a space for musicians to celebrate together and show the world that Africa is positive, Africa is peaceful, and Africa is rich in culture and humanity.
“A secret to our survival is that against all odds we remain focused on showcasing quality African music, whilst committed to building skills in the region and empowering local Tanzanians to deliver a quality festival, with world-class standards.” Mahmoud also recalls difficulties the festival faced in the past, twice Zanzibar had a total power blackout during the show, but the show went on, as it must, and was a success.
“I will never forget the first edition of Sauti za Busara in Forodhani Gardens in February 2004. The festival was poorly funded and the stage backdrop looked like a refugee camp. The artists line up however was amazing, with around 24 groups mostly from East Africa. From that day ten years ago we kept focus on showcasing quality African music,” says Mahmoud.
The festival takes place 14-17 February, 2013 and marks the 10th anniversary of Sauti za Busara. It will showcase 27 artists in the line-up, including; DDC Mlimani Park Orchestra, Peter Msechu, Culture Musical Club, Comrade Fatso and Chabvondoka, Super Maya Baikoko, Mokoomba, Owiny Sigoma Band and Cheikh Lô, among others. Tickets can be purchased online.

AIMA MOSES POURS EMOTION INTO NEW SINGLE ‘MAKE IT ONE DAY’
Rising Dominican reggae artiste Aima Moses has released the first single from his upcoming studio album.
The track Make it One Day is a powerful and emotional tale which speaks about the struggles of the poor and the downtrodden.
In a release to the media, Moses outlined the story behind the autobiographical single.
‘The song is about the everyday struggle of poor people and it is meant as telling a story which will inspire people from the ghettos and the streets. I just want them to know that despite all that is happening, and through all the pain and disappointments, don’t give up, just keep pushing because we all gonna make it one day’, Moses explained.
Moses has experienced poverty first hand in the past hence the lyrics really hit home. He revealed that a lot of emotions went into the writing and recording of the song.
‘The kind of emotion that went into the writing and recording process, was an emotion of pain and still confidence’, Moses confided.
He hopes the song will serve as an empowerment to persons who see themselves in similar situations.
‘I want listeners to hear reality when they listen to the song. I want them to hear and feel what the poorer class faces every day and for those who find themselves in similar situations, to keep on striving’, Moses reaffirmed.
Make it One Day is the preview to Aima Moses’ forthcoming studio album which is still untitled. The set is being produced by Adrian ‘Donsome’ Hanson and Peter ‘Shady’ Harrison. It is expected to be released at the end of March, by Donsome Records.
Early response to Make it One Day has been overwhelming. "People who have heard the song really love it because they can identify with the lyrics and it’s something they embrace as their own anthem", Moses concluded.

CHECK OUT THE AFRICAMAGIC MOVIE AWARDS TROPHY
With the nominees for the first-ever AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA’s) being announced today, here is a sneak peek of the elegant trophy designed especially for the prestigious event.
Merging the timeless potential of wood with the age old strength of bronze, the trophy is a curving sculpture of fluid lines that symbolizes movement while retaining a simple shape and a solid structure.
Mounted on a base of glossy mahogany, three separate polished blades, colored a warm glittering gold, converge and in doing so reveal the subtle silhouette of a woman. This feminine figure at the heart of it all has, in many ways, quietly become an enduring image of the AfricaMagic brand as it has evolved over the past decade.
With the blades representing the three key elements of African storytelling (place, personality and passion), the overall significance of the trophy is enhanced. And fittingly, the triple blade design also speaks to the three dimensional identity of the AfricaMagic brand – programming made in Africa, by Africa for Africa.
An original creation, it is hoped that the AMVCA trophy will speak to both industry professionals and television audiences says Biola Alabi, M-Net Africa MD.
“Internationally there are certain iconic entertainment trophies that carry the same weight with winners and audiences, loved both for its physical form and its emotional meaning. We hope that our trophy will do the same – be a statuette that motivates filmmakers and TV professionals while also inspiring those still to join their ranks and captivating those who watch at home.”
The AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards are being held in association with MultiChoice and are sponsored by Nigeria’s number 1 low sugar malt drink, Amstel Malta. Nominees for the first ever AMVCA’s will be announced during a special hour-long edition of lifestyle series 53 Extra today, Monday January 28 at 10PM.
The 53 Extra broadcast will be simulcast on AfricaMagic Entertainment*, AfricaMagic, AfricaMagic Movies, AfricaMagic Movies 1 and AfricaMagic World/Magic World, so nomination news can be shared with DStv and GOtv audiences quickly.
For more awards info, visit www.africamagic.tv . Winners of the 2013 AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards will be announced during two gala ceremonies in Lagos on March 8 and 9.

SEUN KUTI IS IN NAIROBI!
Afrobeat star Seun Kuti is in Nairobi for "private business". The Nigerian musician is said to be in the country for a "private performance" and other "private engagements".
The son of the Legendary Femi Kuti will be around "for a while", this is according to Buddha Blaze.
On his Twitter page, Seun Wrote: "Apologies, there won't be end of d month show @ Afrika shrine on Saturday as I will b leaving d country for a short trip. Tnx 4 undstanding."
Anyhoo, y'all know Seun from the Occupy Nigeria Movement.
In an interview with Net Nigeria, the social activist was asked whether the Occupy Nigeria revolution, would change things?
He said, "I did not. You don’t sit down 20 years doing nothing and just decide to protest for one week and think the world will change immediately. My own grievance towards the deregulation is their motive behind it. For me, before you can impose deregulation on us, considering the fact that other countries pay far less than you charge for the same product already, they should provide us the same amenities with the other countries they refer us to, then you can charge us what you want to charge us. Not just because Okonjo Iweala said it.said,"
In other news: Here are some reactions to Seun Kuti's "private" visit on Twitter.
Keep it here for updates... In the meantime here is one of his joints, Rise...

How do I put this?
Mejja, you need to start thinking out your music videos.
One, what is this? I mean the starting scene. Really? come on son, really?
Two, there are no hot chics you could get to feature in your video? The cross dressing dude - who is the main lady in the music video - still has stubble from three days of not shaving.
Please tell me this is just trys-ex and that the real video is yet to come.
Anyhoo, here is Mejja's Over My Ex produced by Calif Records and directed by Charles Luche.
