SOUTH AFRICA'S THANDISWA MADZWAI FOR BLANKETS AND WINE IN NAIROBI

South African Afro-Jazz artiste, Thandiswa Mazwai will headline the 24th edition of the Blankets and Wine Concert sponsored by KCB Advantage banking, due to be held on April 3, at Mamba Village-Leisure garden in Karen-Nairobi.
Other artistes slated to perform alongside the South African songstress include local based afro-fusion stars, Lulu, Harry Kimani, and the energetic Makadem.
Curated by Muthoni Ndonga, “The Drummer Queen”, Blankets & Wine is East Africa's premier music experience designed to showcase outstanding musicians in the emerging genres of afro-based music. Every first Sunday of the month the event features three or four outstanding afro-music bands that range from afro soul, afro-fusion, afro-jazz, ethnic, and other genres.
The bank has taken up full sponsorship of the 2011 Blankets & Wine series at a total cost of Kshs 4.5 million. This includes this year’s inaugural event featuring Thandiswa Mazwai, the 5th June sophomore event featuring either LIRA or Zamajobe as the star artistes, the 4th of September event featuring either Oliver Mtukudzi from Zimbwabwe or ASA from Nigeria, and finally the show stopper of the series featuring the indefatigable Hugh Masekela slated for either 27th November or 18th December.

Speaking at Kencom House, KCB Deputy CEO – Group Business, Peter Munyiri, said apart from creating a direct connection between Advantage banking and its target market, this sponsorship, is aimed at nurturing and promoting local talent in an effort to economically and socially empower them.
“Our sponsorship of Blankets and Wine is meant to nurture upcoming Kenyan artistes who specialise in the afro-centric genre of music. Being a Kenyan company, we want to support Muthoni Ndonga, in her efforts of providing an alternative platform, for showcasing the best in Kenyan music but we also want to take it to the next level,” said Munyiri.

He added: “We wish to play our part in creating a Kenyan music industry that is rich in diversity. We also want to play our role in exposing artistes, so that they can earn a decent living, not just pride and fame.”

Hailed as the new generation's Miriam Makeba, Mazwai’s Sophmore album –Ibokwe, went gold within six weeks of its release in South Africa.
After working with Bongo Maffin for 8 years and after 6 award-winning albums, Thandiswa begun work on a solo project - Zabalaza. Zabalaza is a work that elegantly fuses various musical genres, showcases her renowned artistic and musical capabilities, a talent which transcends borders and music genres.
Lulu is a recent addition to the dynamic afro-fusion scene. Paying homage to the coastal city he grew up in his melodic voice and effortless guitar skills creates a world so engaging that takes the audience on a magical journey.

Harry Kiman's fine voice, sincere lyrics and excellent guitar skills set him apart from the rest. Exploring a broad spectrum of issues, Harry effortlessly fuses African soul, rhumba and RnB. Having been through the hustle, here is a young musician with immense talent but just lacking proper support. This self taught musician has nurtured his own unique style and has had hit singles like “Hiaya,” and “Desire” have made him a house hold name.

Makadem, also known as The Ohangla Man is of one Kenya’s most talented and promising performing artist. His command on stage, charisma and powerful vocal delivery, spiced with satire has made many describe him as Kenya’s own Fela Kuti. He has successfully fused different genres of music from Kenya, Africa and the world with his native Luo Benga music.

GROOVE BRINGS IT HARD AT NOMINEES UNVEILING

If the well organized Groove Nominees announcement on Tuesday at the Louse Leakey is anything to go by, I can't wait for the gala night on April 30 at the KICC.

Most times, during the announcements of award nominees the structure employed involves having members of the fourth estate and the nominees sitting at some fancy club drinking or in formal setting like at a presser similar to those held by the minister of education to release the list of top KCSE or KCPE students.
Groove Awards organisers took their time to think out a fun way of announcing this year nominees by staging a show that wss complete with a mock news broadcast that was pre-recorded.

R Kay's first born and only child Prince was the MC for the night, co hosting with artiste, Joyce Omondi.
Anyho, the list was unveiled and last year's big names were completely missing out and some bagging one or two nominations.

New comers like Man Igwe and Kevoyouth bagged nominations in the big boys league - the Male Artiste Of The year Category. The same applied to the female artiste where the perennial list included Esther Wahome, Kambua and Emmy Kosgei.
This could only mean that the industry is growing at a rate where the old guard new to catch up of get caught out.
The nominees all released their music between January 1 2010 and December 31 2010.

NAIROBI JOINS THE WORLD IN EARTH HOUR

Kenya joined people in a record 134 countries and territories across the globe in switching off their lights for an hour in a unified show of support for action towards a sustainable future for our planet.
Hundreds of landmarks in thousands of cities went dark at 8:30pm Saturday local time, as hundreds of millions of people take part in the world’s largest voluntary action for the environment. And with individuals, organisations and governments this year pledging to take their Earth Hour commitment beyond the hour, it did not end when the lights come back on.

“Our participation in this year’s Earth Hour goes in line with our main objective of fostering a culture in which individuals, communities, businesses and other entities voluntarily minimize the impact of their activities to promote sustainable management of the environment,” said Catherine Ndegwa, the CEO NETFUND, adding that “Our partnership with WWF is a clear indication of our commitment in helping transform the attitudes of Kenyan’s towards the conservation of the environment, through creative and innovative initiatives.”

The event traversed the globe over 24 hours, from the first lights being dimmed across Fiji and New Zealand to lights being turned on again in Samoa. The transition lasted longest in Russia, where 11 time zones are covered.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon pledged his support for Earth Hour saying: “Let us join together to celebrate this shared quest to protect the planet and ensure human well-being. Let us use 60 minutes of darkness to help the world see the light.”

Instantly recognizable landmarks across the world that stood in darkness for the hour include the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Eiffel Tower, the London Eye and Big Ben, the Empire State Building, Dubai’s Burj al Arab hotel, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue, Athens’ Acropolis, Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the Sydney Opera House.
“As we enter the second phase of Earth Hour, let us aim to build an interconnected global community engaged in ongoing dialogue and resource sharing. This will help generate real solutions for meeting the complexities of the journey to an environmentally sustainable future,” said Mohamed Awer, Director of WWF’s Kenya Country Office.

This year, a swell of support in Kenya included our world re-known athletes. Asbel Kiprop (1,500m Olympic Champion) proudly donned his Earth Hour t-shirt on his flight from Sydney Australia. He was joined at the Nairobi event by fellow athletes Milkah Chemos (3,000m steeple chase) and Alex Kipchirchir (1,500m).
Others who participated include Safaricom, Nokia, Access Leo Burnett and MTN Business.

ANNE HATHAWAY WAS IN NAIROBI!

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway was in Kenya last week. In a blink and miss it move, The Devil Wears Prada star was spotted having breakfast at the Tribe Hotel on Tuesday morning last week (March 15). Characteristic of most Hollywood stars who sneak in and out of the country, Anne, quietly jetted in and left without any media furor.
It is not clear what the Hollywood actress was doing in the country but word on the net has it that she is being “considered” for the role as Lois Lane in the new Superman: Man Of Steel movie that is set for a December 2012 release.
In the movie Clark Kent is “a young journalist, traveling the globe, who would rather solve problems and help people without resorting to using his special powers.” And apparently, “the plot involves Clark getting involved in some sort of battle between two tribes in West Africa,” according to movie website What’s Playing.
The African bit is said to be shot in June and Anne could just be in the country familiarizing herself with the terrain or just on holiday. It’s anyone’s guess.

Habida in the studio recording

Singer Habida who is currently in Germany recording a number of tracks with top German producers/DJ plans on opening school for the deaf. The desire to do this stems from her observations and experiences on the issue.
The Sunshine singer spoke of future plans to start a school for the deaf.
“The reason I’m particular about this cause, is because my sister has a deaf son and I have seen how there are no resources to provide for this,” she told Hot Secrets.

Habida and Dan Curtin

Before leaving she dropped her latest single and video titled Get Down Tonight produced by R Kay.

“The song was inspired after I got my baby (Michaella Ayoka Ebo now three months shy of a year). I just had a baby. It was a hard pregnancy, the pain and following strict instructions by the doctors to protect my baby. When all this was done I felt like aaahhhh. The song is a representation of that.”
The video was shot by Willy Owusu of Big Ideas at Skylux where she plays a waitress who has had a long day.
