Reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry To Donate Mosquito Nets In Africa

Reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry will once again lead his Three for Three Challenge during the 2015-16 season by donating three life-saving nets to the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign for every three-pointer he makes.

Stephen also announced the team will match Curry’s donation throughout the 2015-16 campaign up to $5,000.

“The Nothing But Nets campaign is an outstanding organization working to help a cause near and dear to my heart,” said Curry said a a release to the press. "I am honored to be in a position to help raise awareness for the campaign and provide nets to protect families from malaria for the fourth season in a row.”

Since his time as a college star at Davidson when his college roommate, Bryant Barr, educated him and encouraged him to get involved in the cause, Curry has been a committed champion of the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, which works with the UN and other partners to distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect families across sub-Saharan Africa from malaria.

In 2013, Stephen visited a refugee camp in Tanzania with the campaign, helping to deliver nets to families and hang them in their homes.

“Nets aren’t just used in sports – they can save lives,” said Chris Helfrich, director of Nothing But Nets. “I’m thrilled Stephen continues to inspire others to join him to protect refugees from malaria. He has witnessed firsthand how devastating this disease is to their families.”

The premiere of the Gentleman’s Wager II movie premiere saw Don Jazzy and the media influencers treated to a luxury welcome dinner hosted by Oscar-nominee, Giancarlo Giannini and veteran Grammy Award winning Artist, Tom Jones and a drinks reception, with an exclusive tasting of Johnnie Walker Blue Label hosted by Oscar-nominee Jude Law.

The film continues with the friendly rivalry theme between Jude Law and Giannini Giancarlo as seen in the first Gentleman’s Wager movie.

The sequel to the Gentleman’s Wager centres on Jude Law trying to win a gorgeous classic Delahaye 135s vintage racing car, a Walker heirloom, which has been in the family since the late 1930s.

The classic car is sought after by Law who attempts to win it through a race to one of Formula One’s iconic tracks – Monaco. The film is part of Johnnie Walker’s “keep Walking’ mantra which uses the strapline ‘Joy Will Take You Further’. This is echoed in the film, when Jude Law exhibits joy from stopping to help people during his long journey from Rome to Monaco.

The movie was launched internationally on 31st of October 2015.

Gospel stars Rufftone and Willy Paul have raised issue with how the industry views and treats Kenyans musicians.

In clearly worded posts they two articulated their beef.

Willy Paul wrote: "It's so sad to see the Kenyan industry, showbizz in general... struggling trying to build international artists while our own are languishing in poverty..... we fight one another instead of helping and figuring out how to get to the next level and raising our flag to other Nations...(sic)"

Kenyan Filmmaker Shoots Athlete Themed Movie, Chep

A new film titled, Chep, directed and written by Jinna Mutune.

The film follows Chep, a determined athlete whose one dream is to be a world marathoner.

Set in the 1970s, the fictional drama will capture the history of Kenyan running, from the early beginnings of the long distance running supremacy. Being a time when female runners were almost unheard of, a young aspiring runner Chebet -- the lead character of the film -- triumphs over prejudice and hardship to challenge a tough environment and become a female world marathoner.

Jinna is famed for her African superhero movie, Leo that starred media personalities like Jeff Koinange and Chris Kirubi.

'Chep' will be released in May next year.

Hollywood actress Kristin Bell Joins Eric Wainaina in Eradicating Polio

Kristen Bell is the newest face to join Rotary’s ‘This Close’ public awareness campaign for polio eradication.

She joins Kenyan Afrofusion star, Eric Wainaina in fighting the paralyzing and life altering disease.

Polio is on the verge of becoming the second human disease ever to be eliminated worldwide after smallpox.

“I am overjoyed to work with Rotary at such an important moment in history,” Bell said. “To help create awareness about this horrible disease is exhilarating.”

Bell is best known for her roles as the quick-witted, sassy title character in the hit series Veronica Mars, razor-sharp Jeannie van der Hooven of House of Lies and the voice of Princess Anna of Arendelle in Disney’s third highest-grossing film Frozen.

She became interested in the importance of vaccines after the birth of her two daughters, Lincoln (age two) and Delta (age one).

The most influential social media users in the country were this year feted at the 3rd Olx Social Media Awards (SOMA), following their use of social media to positively impact audiences.

The Awards culminated in a colourful showdown in Nairobi that saw the winners take home trophies to mark their notable and impactful presence on social media.

The Secretary for Delivery in the Office of the President, Mr. Nzioka Waita, who was guest of honor, applauded Olx and the SOMA organizers for investing in an initiative that inspires Kenyans to use social media positively.

Mr Waita noted that social media has been utilized to fight and achieve good causes which have impacted lives positively “Social media if well utilized can empower Kenyans economically and individuals as well as corporate organizations should take advantage of the opportunities the digital space offers for advancement,” he said.

Olx Country Manager, Mr Peter Ndiangui lauded Kenyans for actively participating in social media, saying the various online networks have undergone a remarkable evolution over the last 10 years.

Musicians Sue For Direct Payments From Safaricom

Artistes have moved to court to push Safaricom to pay them proceeds from Skiza Tunes that their songs get.

The five; Sarah Nagaya, alias Sarah G, David Kasika, Ali Akhonya, Brian Juma and Moses Kungu want the court to stop Safaricom from remiting ringtone money to the Kenya Music Copyright Society of Kenya.

They want proceeds from their music used as phone ringtones to be paid to them directly.

According to The Star, the musicians, through lawyer Albert Murambi, instead want Safaricom to pay them directly for their music.

High Court judge Joseph Onguto ordered the status quo be maintained, pending determination of the case. He ordered the musicians to serve Safaricom and KMCSK.

Now, Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Nelson Mandela for an upcoming miniseries by BET.

Dubbed Madiba, the miniseries is based on two Mandela books, Conversations With Myself and Nelson Mandela by Himself, the miniseries will follow a younger Mandela's involvement in the political unrest in South Africa during the early 1960s, reports Deadline.

Executive produced by Mandela's grandson Kweku Mandela, Madiba will start filming in South Africa next year.

Mandela passed away in 2013, aged 95.

Other actors to have portrayed Mandela include Morgan Freeman, Sidney Poitier, Danny Glover, David Harewood, Clarke Peters, Dennis Haysbert and Terrence Howard.
