President Uhuru Kenyatta's elder sister Margaret Wambui died on Wednesday aged 89 at a Nairobi hospital after a short illness. She was the only daughter and the eldest of
two children of Mzee Kenyatta and his first wife Nyokabi.
Wambui is known for being the first African woman mayor of Nairobi and the second African woman in the country to hold the position.
She was also deputy mayor of Nairobi in 1966 and mayor in 1971.
Her tenure in office was marked by development programs, including expansion of the subways, the building of low-cost housing and sewerage, and the expansion of public health facilities.
She was never married and did not have children.
