Kenyan poet Walter Keyombe has been named the winner of the
4th Annual Northern Essex Community College Peace Poetry Contest for his poem
titled Wolves.
His congratulatory email from the organization read: “We are
pleased to inform you that your poem “Wolves” was selected as part of a small
group of submissions that, because of their creative examination of the topic of
peace, will be published in a chapbook titled 2012 NECC Peace Poetry. Also,
your poem was chosen as the winning category poem. Congratulations!”
Walter has also been invited to perform the winning poem at
the American college on May 4. The reading is “to honor the winners of this
contest, and to celebrate the publication of this chapbook of outstanding peace
poems.”
Walter will also be presented with a copy of the book and an
award certificate. He will also have a chance to talk about his peace work in Kenya.
Walter works with Youth for Human Rights International
(YHRI) a nonprofit organization. The purpose of
YHRI is to teach youth about human rights, specifically the United Nations
Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and inspire them to become advocates for
tolerance and peace.
