Several high profile Kenyan celebrities and personalities kicked off their shoes and went barefoot for charity. The
Natembea (walking) campaign aims to raise awareness on the importance of footwear in Kenya. In remote parts of Kenya, buying shoes is seen as a luxury to many and not treated as a priority. This leaves the kids exposed to the dangers of walking barefoot most of their lives.

They grow up barefoot, play barefoot, go school barefoot and even visit the latrines barefoot. This is the reason why the Natembea campaign is using the personalities and celebrities to raise awareness about the issue and help raise funds to buy shoes for over 5000 children this year.

The celebs and personalities include Kiss 100’s
Sanaipei Tande, Rita Oyier Marketing Executive for Sameer Agriculture and Livestock limited, Hot 96 Breakfast Presenter
Nick Ndeda, Safaricom CEO
Bob Collymore, PR Guru
Gina Din Kariuki,

Citizen TV news anchor
Julie Gichuru, Former radio presenter
Eve D Souza, K24’s
Jeff Koinage,
Anto Neosoul, CEO KCB Group
Dr. Martin Oduor-Otieno, MP
Martha Karua and football captain
Dancan Otieno of SID FC.

On Julie’s
Facebook page, she writes about the campaign: “You can always make a difference. A group of young Kenyans had a vision to give every Kenyan child the opportunity to own a decent pair of shoes under the banner of
The Natembea Campaign. They communicated with me and with the support of Safaricom and Bata we delivered 1,000 pairs of shoes to students in Kyaume School, Kangundo.”
