Radio Queen Adelle Onyango Named Among 2017 Bbc 100 Women

Today, the BBC has announced its popular, annual 100 Women list (see press release attached). This year, out of the sixty women listed, seven are African. The women from the continent on include:

Adelle Onyago - a radio and television host from Kenya seeking to empower young women through mentorship and apprenticeship programmes

Anita Nderu - a TV presenter and radio news anchor at Capital FM based in Nairobi, Kenyawho is passionate about mentoring youth.

Ellen Johnson - the 24th and current President of Liberia since 2006 and the first elected female head of state in Africa.

Marieme Jamme – taught herself to read and write at the age of 16 and is now a self-made businesswoman in Senegal.

Talent Jumo - supports victims of revenge porn, giving them counselling and legal advice and fighting for sexual and reproductive health rights for women in Zimbabwe.

Tiwa Savage – a Nigerian singer, songwriter and philanthropist Tiwa Savage is an intergral member of the Afrobeats scene and plans to open a music school

Speakers Unveiled For The New Media Conference Upcoming Nairobi Maiden Edition

 The speakers of the maiden edition of the New Media Conference – Nairobi have officially been unveiled. 
 

The conference which is collaboration between two of Africa's leaders in digital marketing Olorisupergal and Anyiko PR has drawn key leaders in Africa’s digital space who will shape conversations around the theme of the conference: "Driving Kenya's Socio-economic Transformation through New Media." The conference is set to take place on the 29^th September, 2017 at Michael Joseph Center, Nairobi from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The keynote speech at the conference will be delivered by Country Manager for Google, Kenya & Strategic Telco Partnerships Lead, Africa: Charles Murito, a high flying professional and trendsetter passionate to see growth in digital skills within the Kenyan digital space and beyond. Idina Menzel Marries Rent Co-Star Aaron Lohr

Idina Menzel had Twitter buzzing Monday when she announced her marriage to Aaron Lohr. The two met when they co-starred in the 2005 film adaptation of the Broadway musical Rent.

"Wanted to let you know... Married the love of my life #aaronlohr this weekend @ our home," the 46-year-old star informed her followers. "Dad & son walked me down aisle. It was magical."

No other details were immediately available.

In a similar fashion, Menzel announced her engagement to the 41-year-old actor via social media in September. "I have wonderful news...my man and I are engaged! We are so happy," tweeted Menzel, who will voice Queen Elsa in Olaf's Frozen Adventure. "It's a beautiful time."

Football Beats Supreme Court Ruling On Google Search

Google has released the top trending searches in Kenya for the last one week - the period between Sunday, September 17 and Sunday, September 24, 2017, the week of the Supreme Court ruling.

Not surprisingly,  football still took the leading position, while the Supreme court ruling was number 4. Chief Justice David Maraga and Justice Njoki Ndungu were the top searched personalities in relation to the full judgement on the 2017 election, issued on Tuesday 19th.

Google Search Trends is a publicly available tool that indicates search patterns over a period of time and shows the clusters of searches that made it to Hot Trends in the country. EPL fixtures (Manchester United Vs Everton, Arsenal Vs Chelsea, Southampton Vs Manchester United, Leicester Vs Liverpool) and Diego Costa’s transfer from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid topped the football searches.

On the entertainment scene, the strained relationship between East Africa’s music sensation Diamond Platinumz, and his wife Zari Hassan grew into a regional affair. This is after Zari Hassan finally spoke out on Diamond's infidelity. Tanzanian Singer Diamond Platnumz had caused a stir after admitting to siring video vixen, Hamisa Mobetto’s son, during a live TV interview last week.

The week also saw Kenyans take to the internet in search of news on Kylie Kristen Jenner’s pregnancy. Just like her big sister Kim Kardashian, the news of Kylie Jenner broke the internet, mainly with a string of hilarious memes and conspiracy theories about the latest addition to the Kardashian clan.

Online search for hornets appeared to be most interesting trend of the week. Following the attack on journalists, policemen and civilians by a swarm of bees outside the Supreme Court - Kenyans initiated a new internet craze with a biblical allusion, Exodus 23:28. “I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way.” It is alluded that the swarm of bees played a critical role in preventing a clash between the police and supporters of the two main political parties, Jubilee and NASA.

President Uhuru Kenyatta remained the top searched politician in the country in the week of the Supreme Court ruling.

Maisha Magic Begins Its Search For ‘The Ultimate Comic’

Maisha Magic East in partnership with Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki is in search of Kenya’s ‘Ultimate Comic’. The new reality show dubbed Ultimate Comic is a televised stand-up TV comedy show which aims to find one rib cracking stand-up comedian between the age of 18 and 50 to perform comedy acts on stage, created by themselves.

The hunt will begin through auditions in four major towns in Kenya beginning in Mombasa from today, 22nd & 23rd September, then moving to Kisumu City on 29th and 30th September. Auditions will be held in Nakuru on 6th and 7th October and finally Nairobi on 13th and 14th October.

Maisha Magic East Head of Channel Margaret Mathore says, “The Ultimate Comic is a platform that Maisha Magic East is offering, for local comedians to showcase their talent. We strive to deliver the shows that people love into their hands and their living rooms while using our influence and resources to play a positive role in Africa. We remain committed to helping to grow our local people and creative industries. This show is a continued sign of that commitment by Maisha Magic East.”

Following the auditions, 40 successful comedians from across the country will be shortlisted to take part in the knock out stages and live shows before the grand finale scheduled for March 2018. In the winner takes all show, The Ultimate Comic will have a hefty task of not only bringing rib cracking stand-up comedy to convince the judges of the show that they are the funniest person, but will have to win the love of the whole country to garner votes for the top position.

Judges include renowned comedians Tony Njuguna, Felix Odiwuor popularly known as Jalang’o and radio host Massawe Japanni. The short listed comedians will also receive mentorship by various top personalities among them Charles Bukeko, aka Papa Shirandula, MC Jessy, Abel Mutua, Sammy Mwangi, Victor Ber, Carolyne Adong’o and Obillo Ng’ongo.

The Ultimate Comic aims to grow new talent in the comedy industry and accord a chance for both the young and old alike to realize their dreams. The call for auditions is open for comedians aged between 18 and 50, with fresh rib cracking ideas and jokes that will make for good quality entertainment. The winner of The Ultimate Comic will not only have the title Ultimate Comic, but they will also walk away with a TV contract, one million shillings and a car in the winner takes all competition.

The Ultimate Comic show will air on Maisha Magic East from Saturday 4 November 2017 at 8.30pm. It becomes the 5th of the 15 local shows to launch on Maisha Magic East for the year 2017/2018 in an aim to promote local productions and in turn support local talent in the film industry.

The new comedy reality show will air exclusively on Maisha Magic East on DStv channel 158 and GOtv channel 4 air every Saturday at 8.30pm

No More Hustle When Booking A Ticket On The Madaraka Express, You Can Pay And Book Via MPESA

Kenyans will now enjoy an additional service that will enable them to book and pay for tickets on the Madaraka Express through their mobile phones.

This follows the introduction of an SMS based payment platform utilizing USSD code *639#.

The code will enable passengers to book, pay and even cancel tickets for the Madaraka Express.

Those seeking to buy tickets will be required to dial the code and follow a series of prompts that will enable them buy tickets to the Mombasa, Nairobi, Voi and Mtito Andei passenger terminals/destinations from the comfort of their locations.

The SMS based USSD code will also enable passengers to immediately make payments via MPESA to secure their tickets.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina says the new platform will enable passengers to make up to 5 bookings at a go and will also allow Kenyans to purchase tickets up to 7 days in advance.

 “We are seeking to leverage the technology offered by the new platform to counter the secondary market of tickets by middlemen who have taken advantage of the use of the stations as the main source of tickets. Through the platform, we hope to make it more convenient for Kenyans seeking to travel to plan their journey in advance and make bookings on time.” Mr. Maina added, “the system will also require those making bookings to provide their names and National Identity Card Number except for minors.” 

Once the booking is done passengers will receive a confirmation SMS with a special reference number indicating their destination, time and date of travel as well as the number of passengers reflected on the booking.

Passengers will then be required to print their tickets from the service booths at the station upon arrival and produce their National ID cards while checking in to verify that they made the purchase. 

Those utilizing the platform are advised to load their MPESA accounts with adequate funds before dialling the USSD code to enable them make direct purchases by following the SMS prompts provided. The new platform is set to be rolled out on 23 September 2017.

The development of an online booking portal which will allow online payment service providers to connect to the booking system is at trial stage and will be launched in the coming weeks.

TV Actress Wanza Dies During Childbirth

TV actress Maureen Wanza on Tuesday became collateral damage in the ongoing nurses strike that has lasted 106 days. The actress died while giving birth to her first child in Kilifi County. She bled to death and unfortunately her baby also died minutes later.

Maureen was a familiar face in local TV productions, including Sumu and Almasi.

Kenyan artiste's work featured in popular TV series, Insecure

Kenyan painter Elias Mungora "commends the efforts" of America TV producers for seeking him out and using his painting in their popular TV show.

Elias' 2016 painting titled Urban Chronicles was featured in the new season of HBO series Insecure.

Making the announcement, he wrote on Facebook, "Also on positive things matters. Just to recognise and commend the efforts of the creators/writers /directors of Insecure. The conscious decision to look for stories /creative work to feature in their show even from regions usually ignored by such high profile productions is everything. Issa Rae and the time are leading the way here."

Elias said, "Yeah. The team reached out. Sort permission and acquired the image to use on the show. They followed the entire process." Adding, "It was a humbling experience." 

Insecure explores the black female experience from the perspective of the two female protagonists, Issa (Issa Rae) and Molly (Yvonne Orji) who have been best friends with each other since their college days at UCLA.

Watu wote, a film produced in Kenya becomes the first Kenyan film to win the student oscars. Katja Benrath from Hamburg Media School  won in the Narrative category for her short movie "Watu Wote a film based on the 2015 Mandera Bus attack.
