Goodwill Ambassador Suzanna Owiyo marks Biodiversity in Kenya

Goodwill Ambassador Suzanna Owiyo marked the International Day for Biodiversity in Kenya on May 22.

The theme for this year, ‘Water and Biodiversity” was chosen to coincide with the United Nations designation of 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation.

As part of the celebrations to mark the day in Kenya, UNEP National Goodwill Ambassador Suzanna  was present for the launch of the ‘adopt-a-forest’ initiative.

Led by the World Student Community for Sustainable Development - through the WSCSD affiliate student group in Kenya – local university students will undertake the restoration of forests and the establishment and maintenance of tree nurseries in several universities in Kenya.

The initiative highlights the importance of forest ecosystems in providing water security, supporting biodiversity and sustainable development in Kenya. Biodiversity is critical to the maintenance of both the quality and quantity of water supplies and plays a vital but often under-acknowledged role in the water cycle.
