Kenyan film gets five nods from AMA Awards
This year’s African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held in Yenagoa, Bayelesha State, Nigeria, on Saturday night saw Kenyan movie director Wanuri Kahiu walk away with a total of five awards for the movie From a Whisper after receiving a total of eleven nominations.
From A Whisper is a movie that tells the story of the 1988 Embassy Bombings and was over the weekend screened on DSTV. The film walked away with Best Director, Best Picture, Best Original Soundtrack, Achievement and Best Screenplay.
An overwhelmed Wanuri said, “Hopefully I can make more movies and may make people take movie more seriously and also give a chance for local movies to be seen internationally and in the region and to be recognised by the continent and we were trying to raise money so that we can make DVD’s and released them.”
Wanuri was unable to be at the awards as she had a prior engagement in Nairobi where she attended the launch of Mnet’s Great Africans series at the National Museum on Friday night. Her documentary on Wangari Maathai was the premier episode of the TV seriesProf Maathai meanwhile couldn’t make it for the launch but sent a video message. Among those who attended the launch included the minister for Information and Communications Samuel Poghisio and M-Net’s Director of African Operations Biola Adekanbi
