Femi Kuti’s Ex; Funke Kuti Is A Real Housewife

The entertainment industry has been buzzing since rumors began circulating that the Real Housewives franchise is coming to Lagos--this would make Lagos the first African city to be featured.

There has been a lot of speculations about which high society ladies will be featured be on the show.

There is no way of confirming these rumours not much is known about the producers of this show. It's only natural that a show of this sort would generate as much excitement as it has.

The latest name to drop on the list of stars for the show is that of Femi Kuti's ex-wife the beautiful and amazing Funke Kuti.

I know that these women are certain to officially put Lagos on the global map. It would be very entertaining to peek into their daily activities, their lavish life styles, watch them at their soirees, get their latest gist, gossip and see how their amazing personalities mix or don't mix on reality television.

The lives of affluent, bourgeois housewives and professional women would be 100% entertaining especially when the women in question are Nigerian women. In fact the show may even be bigger than the Atlanta version.

It’s no longer news that Kenya Moore, former Miss USA and star of the Real Housewives Of Atlanta was in Nigeria last month for Dbanj’s DKM concert. We have reasons to believe that she might have met with some of the prospective cast members of the Real Housewives of Lagos like Caroline Danjuma, Shade Okoya and Funke Kuti during her visit to Nigeria.

Sources say that Kenya Moore’s production company is the producer of Real Housewives of Lagos.

American pop idol, Joe Jonas was in Kenya for Charity.

He spoke about his time at the Maasai Mara where he was volunteering with Me to We’s charity partner Free The Children, interacting and learning from local community members, and immersing himself into the rich history and culture of Kenya.

“My brothers and I have been supporting Free The Children for a number of years now,” said Joe Jonas. “In fact, this fall we will be performing at one of its youth empowerment events, We Day Minnesota, in front of 18,000 students from across the state. I’ve never been to Kenya before and I was able to see first-hand the value and role education plays on the lives of children. In fact, my brothers and I will have a special message to share with our fans while we are on tour this year.”

“We were thrilled to host Joe Jonas in Kenya this summer and give him a chance to get involved, learn and support communities in need,” said Marc Kielburger, co-founder of Free The Children and Me to We. “Whether you’re a celebrity or not, giving back to people who need it most is an incredible feeling – whether it is traveling and volunteering oversees like Joe did, or supporting your community and giving food to your local food bank. Everyone has an opportunity to make a difference.”

Orange subscribers who have signed up to the network’s mobile money transfer service, Orange Money, will now have the convenience to access the service from TOTAL filling stations in 12 African countries.

This is part of a partnership deal giving Orange customers access to Orange Money services at all TOTAL service stations in African and Middle-Eastern countries where the two groups are present and Orange Money is available.

The 13 countries are Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Cameroon, CĂ´te d’Ivoire, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Niger and Senegal as well as Jordan in the Middle East.

Sauti Sol To Join South Africa’s Tumi Molekane At City of Stars Festival

South African and international hip hop star/MC Tumi Molekane and Kenyan Afro-pop band Sauti Sol join the 2013 City of Stars Festival (COS) headline acts.

Celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary, the Lake of Stars Project are staging a two-day, multi-venue arts festival and conference showcasing the best in emerging and acclaimed talent from Malawi and beyond at Sanctuary Lodge in Lilongwe, Malawi from 27 to 28 September 2013.

Now flying solo after travelling the globe as Tumi and the Volume playing to crowds 10 thousand strong, South Africa’s leading hip hop artist has just released his third solo album Rob The Church. Produced primarily by bass player Fred Hirschy producer for Freddy Masamba and Senegalese artist Didier Awadi, the album takes a quite deliberate move into the oft-attempted African influenced hip-hop album. Typified by polyrhythm and afro beat syncopations but never departing wholly from the current synth-bass heavy 808 sounds capes that have populated today's hip hop.

Tumi will be joined by Johannesburg’s own Reason who started out as a battle rapper. It wasn’t long before South Africa took notice and his first radio hit Do It Like I Can reached number one on Metro FM, 5FM and Ukhosi FM music charts. Reason has gone on to collaborate with some of South Africa’s most prolific rappers such as Proverb, Tumi, Zubz, ILL Skillz, HHP, Amu and AKA.

Kenyan Afro-pop band Sauti Sol will bring their blend of warm resonant pop and traditional Kenyan influences to COS. Sauti Sol’s mĂ©lange of energetic rhythms have promoted the group to become one of East Africa’s most celebrated with their latest EP produced by Spoek Mathambo. With two extremely successful albums in three years, this band reflects a range of musical wealth inspired by African artists including Lokua Kanza, Fadhili Williams, Daudi Kabaka, Fally Ipupa and Salif Keita to British and American artists: Coldplay and Jason Mraz.

City of Stars will feature an eclectic programme of live music, film, theatre, literature, exhibitions and speakers, and will promote Malawian culture and creativity as well as attracting international artists and arts practitioners.

British-born singer YaDi joins the international line-up. Her unique sound is an amalgamation of an Algerian, Italian and Norwegian heritage, and reveals her fascination with North African music and aesthetics. She’s be working with high profile producers including The Very Best’s Johan Hugo (Santigold, M.I.A.), Ariel Rechtshaid (HAIM, Major Lazer) and Hotflush label head Scuba.

Svermere will treat festival goers to traditional music from Norway with a twist. Inspired by jazz, rock and world music, Svermere was formed by one of Norway’s most recognised fiddle players, Aslak Brimi. They have been described as “playful and lively” with “first class interplay” by Norway’s leading folk music magazine, Folkemusikk.

Other international acts confirmed include London/Malawi’s The Very Best and Glasgow DJ Auntie Flo who will bring his unique afro-futurist sound, encompassing classic house, disco, techno, electronica influences alongside afrobeat, kwaito, cumbia and South American rhythms. Plus London spoken word artist George the Poet, who was recently described by the UK Guardian as ‘the hottest name in spoken word.’

Confirmed Malawians on the bill include one of the country’s best reggae artists Sally Nyundo, lead vocalist for Konkalazi, Sirius, and singer-songwriter Jaco Jana. The infamous wordsmith Q Malewezi and poet Yolanda Kaluma are also among the first confirmed acts. Malawian artistic partners include Zilanie Nyundo (Fashion Malawi Edition and CREAM!), Music Crossroads, and Rhythm of Life Malawi.

Earlybird tickets are now on sale for K6000 at selected venues across Malawi including Buchanans, Flavours Café, Kiboko, Mabuya, Papaya, Sanctuary Lodge, and Wilderness Safaris (Lilongwe and Blantyre at Ryalls Hotel). Alternatively, you can buy tickets online or get them as part of a travel package through our travel partner, Wilderness Safaris.

City of Stars is supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe, Live Nation, Malawi’s Latitude 13 hotel and Scotland’s David Livingstone 200 Fund.

Since 2004 the Lake of Stars project has staged an award-winning festival on the shores of Lake Malawi, alongside other events in the UK and across the globe. The project has reached more than 200 million people through international and local media coverage. It has generated over $3 million spend and 200 employment opportunities in Malawi.

Shuga Looking For New Actor To Join Nick Mutuma

The Shuga producers are looking to cast fresh new talent to fill a range of key male and female roles in the award winning drama series, alongside Nigerian actor and musician Ikubese Emmanuel Ifeanyichukwu and Kenyan actor, singer and radio presenter Nick Mutuma.

As well as a number of principal roles, two minor parts will be chosen by public voting from a shortlist of six, with voting taking place online at http://www.shuga.tv in August 2013.

“We are looking for real, raw talent that is going to help bring the Shuga drama series alive for Nigerian audiences,” said Georgia Arnold, Executive Director, MTV Staying Alive Foundation, “With principle photography for Shuga just a few weeks away, and the TV show premiering across Africa in December 2013 – this could be a huge career boost for aspiring Nigerian actors and actresses.”

Fusing public health messaging with gripping storylines, Shuga is part of a powerful 360-degree mass media prevention education campaign designed to raise awareness about HIV prevention, teen pregnancy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Nigeria.

Recent research among youth aged 18 to 24 has highlighted widespread ignorance about or indifference to contraception, poor access to contraceptives, a significantly high incidence of mother-to-child HIV transmission, gender-based violence in the region, lack of knowledge about sexual transmission of HIV and the individual HIV status.

This year’s campaign seeks to promote HIV reduction behaviours among this target population through encouraging HIV counselling and testing, to motivate a reduction in the number of sexual partners as well as promoting awareness about services for women who have experienced gender-based violence.

Auditions will hold on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th July between 8am and 6pm at Protea Hotel, Ikoyi, Westwood. Candidates must be a Nigerian within the ages of 18 and 55 with good spoken English and no criminal record. No previous acting experience is necessary.

Akshay Kumar To Wow Audiences With Action Sequel

Akshay Kumar, Bollywood’s favourite action man. has been making waves globally since the announcement of his new Avatar in the sequel offering ‘Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai Dobaara’.

Akshay, who plays a flamboyant gangster in the film, has been spotted trotting the globe for promotions of the film. First India, then Oman, followed by the UK and recently Akshay visited the United States of America, where he partook in a press conference with the film’s director Milan Luthria and shared his experiences about the film.

The film depicts the fervent gang wars of the 80’s era in Mumbai and Akshay has continued to move away from type to play a baddie in this film. Commenting on his villainous role, he said: ‘Bad is the New Good’ and commented: ‘I am not trying to glorify a bad lead character; it is just a character I am playing. Not many actors agree to play a negative role’.

Akshay last played a negative character in the film Ajnabee after which ‘Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara’ would be his second. The film is a ‘villain’s love story’ and Akshay feels very strongly about his role, as he believes not many bad characters take centre stage as important characters. Akshay also said that the only difference in the sequel is the change of a few faces whilst the story picks up from where it left off.

However, despite the negative hue in his character, Akshay seems to be concentrating more on romance then his usual action-packed stunts in the film. He has passed the stunt baton to Imran Khan, who performs a series of thrilling action sequences. Akshay said: “He [Imran Khan] did all the stunts with me and jumped from rooftops, and I was very impressed with him. I think he is the next action hero.’

Returning to form for this sequel, director Milan Luthria (The Dirty Picture) was all praise for Akshay Kumar, saying: “Akshay is a very happy guy, a wonderful happy person to work on and off the sets. Having a person like him with you gives you a lot of confidence. He kept the atmosphere very happy on the set. I also felt that the character played in the original instalment by Emraan Hashmi needed to be older, with a different kind of presence.”

Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara releases globally on 15th August 2013.

Keith Sweat Confirmed For Kenyan Concert

Legendary Rhythm and Blues star Keith Sweat will be in Nairobi for a one off October concert at the Carnivore Grounds.

According to his official website Keith has confirmed that he will be performing in Nairobi on October 5.

This will be after a two day performance in Uganda.

Keith Sweat released his debut album Make It Last Forever and set his path towards fame and success.

He enjoyed many successes as a result of this album, skyrocketing towards the top of both R&B and pop charts and selling over three million copies.

Four of the songs on this album landed on the pop or R&B charts and in some cases both.

The hit “I Want Her” skyrocketed to number one on the R&B charts while hitting number five on the pop charts.

The songs “Make It Last Forever” reached number two and “Something Just Ain’t Right” reached number three both on the R&B charts.

As a result of his success with this album, Sweat moved away from his job as a brokerage assistant on Wall Street.

He is quoted as saying, “My Strategy is to give people just enough of me, then pull back, so they’ll want to see me when I come back.”

Adding that his songs are “about situations I’ve gone through being in a relationship. You won’t hear me write a song about walking on a beach because that isn’t what my life has been about. I write songs about what I know and what I know is the ups and downs of relationships. What I know about is what it feels like to hurt and be hurt. What I know about is love.”

These Are The Fake Emerald Housemates

On Friday 19 July, the Diamond and Ruby houses will merge. In addition, six fake Emerald housemates will join The Chase during the Airtel Arena Showdown and will stay on for a few days to spice up the game and will bring lots of excitement and intrigue.
Their objective is to confuse the other housemates and convince them that the Emerald house is real. The housemates are: Sophie (Uganda); JJ (Zimbabwe); Jazz (Kenya); Busi (South Africa); Eveva (Zambia) and Alusa (Kenya).

Alusa (Kenya)
Age: 32

TV Entertainer Alusa is a married father of two. He has a Diploma in Communications and hails from Nairobi. He lists Sauti Sol as his favourite musician and his favourite screen star is Denzel Washington, because “he’s an intense and passionate actor”.

Alusa says the best things about Africa are the diversity in landscape and culture of the people. His favourite places in Kenya are his village – Kakamega – and Mombasa. Outside of his home country, his favourite place is Greece, because of its rich historical culture.

His role model is Bishop TD Jakes, because “He’s not only a religious leader but also a smart and influential businessman in the modern world”. The achievement he’s most proud of? Being nominated for an Emmy award for a radio drama he directed: ‘Songo Love’.

Alusa says having Africa’s eyes on him 24/7 will be “a bit intimidating and very challenging”. He warns viewers to “expect the unexpected” from him, and promises “mad fun & energy”. He says his strategy as an Emerald housemate is to “pretend, pretend, pretend. I have so much information on them so I know which buttons to press.”

Busi (South Africa)
Age: 23

Third year BA Marketing student Busi describes herself as “spontaneous, opinionated, open-minded and friendly”.  She feels she can strike up a conversation with anybody and also express herself and her opinions without holding back. She values honesty, friendliness and open-mindedness in others.

Busi’s favourite book is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and on the small screen, she enjoys watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Vampire Diaries, Modern Family and, of course, Big Brother Africa. Her favourite actors are Leonardo di Caprio, Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Kate Blanchett – no wonder Titanic is one of her favourite films.

Her favourite place in South Africa is Rosebank in Johannesburg, and the thing she likes most about the continent is the way its people pull together in support of a common cause. Away from home, she loves New York because of the fast pace, opportunities and the way people can express themselves.

Her mom has played a major role in her life, guiding her through every disappointment. In her time as an Emerald housemate, she promises to deliver entertainment, confusion, a fashion extravaganza, openness, laughs, drama and intrigue for viewers.

Eveva (Zambia)
Age: 27

Massage therapist Eveva is from Chipata and enjoys music by Bob Marley, Rihanna, Shakira and Espee and her favourite actress is Julia Roberts. Her favourite book is The Secret and her favourite TV show is The Oprah Winfrey Show.

She lists her mom as her role model, praising her as “a strong woman”. She is inspired by Russell Simmons, because of his business savvy. The achievement she’s most proud of is opening her own massage parlour, because she has always dreamed of running her own business.

Eveva’s favourite place in Zambia is Livingstone and says the best thing about Africa is that the people are very loving and friendly. Her favourite place outside of the continent is Holland, “because the people are open-minded”.

She feels “honoured and blessed” that Africa will be watching her 24/7 in the Big Brother house, promising viewers entertainment and lots of drama, her strategy in the house is “ to be herself”. Asked to describe herself in five words, she lists: “hyper, hardworking, efficient, outgoing & crazy”.

Jazz (Kenya)
Age: 26

Copywriter Jazz describes herself as fun, lovable, humorous and cute. She considers herself to be a friendly person who enjoys comforting people and making them feel special & loved. Jazz likes people with a sense of humour and openness – “whether bad or good, at least you know who you’re dealing with”.

Her favourite TV shows are Modern Family and Game of Thrones, with her recent favourite film: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. She has a number of favourite actors, but singles out Bill Nighy as one.

Jazz says the best things about Africa are the weather, the people and the wildlife. Her favourite place in Kenya is the Shaba Game Lodge, with Australia her favourite place outside the continent.

Her mom is her role model, because she raised her and her two brothers alone. She says her family has taught her to be who she is today.

She’s excited and nervous to have the continent’s eyes on her in The Chase, but says: “I was born to do this!” her strategy is to shock and surprise the current housemates.

JJ (Zimbabwe)
Age: 22

Harare-born JJ is a singer and songwriter from Zimbabwe, with a National Diploma in Media. His favourite books are 48 Laws of Power and The Secret and his favourite movies include American Gangster, 300 and The Vow.

He describes himself as “fun, ambitious, happy, loving and warm” and says the thing he likes most about himself is his “chilled quality”. JJ likes “happy, smiley people” but dislikes people who are “full of themselves”.

JJ cites his dad as his role model and says the best thing about Africa is its people and his favourite place in Zimbabwe is Nyanga, “because of the fresh air”. Outside of Africa, his favourite place is Studio 25 in Manchester, which was a roof over his head “when times were tough”. The achievement he’s most proud of so far is the release of his first single – internationally – this year.

His strategy as an Emerald housemate is to confuse the current housemates and use reverse psychology on them. He says that viewers can expect “laughs, jokes and fun times” when he’s in the house.

Sophie (Uganda)
Age: 22

Nicknamed “Little One”, Sophie is a freelance jewellery and clothing designer from Kampala. She describes herself as “tolerant, candid, silly, real and loud”. Her favourite personal quality is that she’s not easily angered and doesn’t bear grudges. She dislikes people who are rude, dishonest or hypocritical.

Sophie lists her favourite TV show as Shameless and she likes the music of Lady Gaga, Liquideep, Nas, Asa and Jason Mraz, while her favourite movies include A Bronx Tale, The Lion King and The Dictator.

She says the best thing about Africa is the people: “Africans are warm, welcoming, full of life and smiles despite their everyday struggles”. Her favourite place in Uganda is a small town called Kilemba – she calls it “a little piece of heaven”. She also loves Venice, despite never having been there, calling it “truly beautiful”.

Sophie cites her mom as her role model. “Her devotion to my sister and my wellbeing is just inspirational – everything she has done was for our comfort,” she says.

She says viewers can expect her to be “real and different” and her strategy is to stick with her fellow Emerald housemate on their mission as fake Big Brother housemates.
