JOE JONAS TWEETS ABOUT AFRICA

American singer Joe Jonas tweeted about his trip to Botswana. Here is an excerpt of it...

My journey began in Maun, Botswana, Africa. I brought some of my best friends with me to be a part of this incredible experience. We were all changed by what we saw.

I also spent time with some of the babies that were born to mothers carrying the HIV AIDS virus. Out of the entire trip this was one of the most touching moments. I miss those children already. I was close to coming back home with many Joe Jr.s.

We went to a couple villages where there were 7 kids with one mother in a home made out of clay and soda bottles. We were able to bring them blankets to stay warm because the nights were so cold...

For the future, I plan on going back to Africa, as well as other nations, to help out in any way I can. I feel like hands-on work is where I feel most satisfied. I look forward to going to different places – not only Africa where I have new friends – but all around the world. It is my goal to spend 50% of my time and life doing what I can to help others.

Last week, Kenya’s winning doodler, 12 year old Priyanka Shah had her design shown on the Google Kenya homepage for the day after being voted the country’s best doodle.

Now Priyanka’s design will compete against winners from all the other countries in the contest for the chance to have her work featured on the Google homepage of participating countries on 11th July. Voting for the international winner will be open between June 21 - 28.

The international winner will also win a trip to South Africa for themselves and their family, offered by South Africa Tourism Board. The runner-up will win 2 VIP tickets to a Premiere League football match in the UK offered by Sports New Media.

GOOGLE TAKES WORLD CUP CLOSER TO THE PEOPLES

Googler Nicola Dixon lending a hand during a Search introduction and training for students Benta and Clara, both from a local Kilifi school.

Google has teamed up with Moving The Goalposts (MTG) Kilifi to bring the football fever to rural communities on the east coast of Kenya.
In the evenings MTG is showing matches on a giant screen in rural areas where people would not otherwise have access to television. During the mornings, Google has set up a rural ICT lab to train the MTG girls and provide basic ICT education.

Satellite technology is being set up to provide data connectivity for the rural Internet classroom, funded by Google. In the classroom, the MTG students will be able to learn how to use the Internet and computers as part of storytelling, using video, audio and photographs to communicate with people around the world.
Moving The Goal Post in conjuction with Google have set up World Cup viewing centres for Kilifi residents. During the day, Google also set up rural ICT labs to provide basic ICT training.
Moving The Goalposts is an organisation that uses football to develop essential life skills - confidence, leadership, self esteem - to vulnerable young women. MTG targets teenage girls between the age of 9 and 25 years from poor families. Bringing the girls together around football also provides an opportunity to provide education about reproductive health, human rights and economic empowerment.

Joseph Mucheru
, Lead, Google Sub-Saharan Africa said, "This is one of our first initiatives targeted at children in rural areas and we hope to learn from it and continue encouraging rural populations to go online and use the Internet. I am delighted that we are able to support broadcasting the games to thousands of people who are passionate about football. They would not otherwise be part of the football fever sweeping the world for the first championships held in Africa."

The project started on June 6, and will finish on July 12. The location is Kilifi, Kenya, where the Internet classroom is set up at the local MTG centre, and girls from 7 schools around the region are attending the ICT skills training. Meanwhile, the screen will be travelling to a number of sites in the area. They have already been to Mnarani primary school field, Karisa Maitha (Bukungu) Stadium and are currently in Bahati till 22 June. The screens will also be going to Matsangoni (23-26 June), Silala (27th-29 June) and Ganze centre (from 30 June).

WRITERS ON AFRICAN PILGRIMAGE BOOK PROJECT

Pilgrimages, a new project of the Chinua Achebe Center for African Writers and Artists at Bard College and Chimurenga, will send 14 African writers to 13 African cities, and one city in Brazil, for two weeks to explore the complexities of disparate urban landscapes. The writers will create 13 nonfiction travel-writing books about their trips that will capture each city as South Africa hosts Africa’s first World Cup. At the same time, the continent will be on display—to itself and to the world—to a greater degree than at any time since independence. The 13 collected books are intended to prompt a shift in the focus of African reportage and will comprise the Pilgrimages book series, to be published simultaneously in Lagos, Nairobi, and Cape Town during the 2012 African Cup of Nations football tournament.
“These talented writers are about to embark on 14 wholly different and fascinating itineraries, from exploring ancient scrolls in Timbuktu, to the Anglican Church in Uganda, to Somaliland’s elections, to name a few,” says Tom Burke, the Achebe Center program manager. “It is a landmark project, and our partners—large and small—across the continent have lent enthusiasm and support. It’s an exciting time to watch these pilgrimages unfold, and it will be quite something to read these books once their pages are written.”
The 14 writers that will participate in the Pilgrimages project and the cities they will visit are: Chris Abani (Johannesburg, South Africa); Doreen Baingana (Hargeisa, Somaliland); Uzodinma Iweala (Timbuktu, Mali); Funmi Iyanda (Durban, South Africa); Billy Kahora (Luanda, Angola); Kojo Laing (Cape Town, South Africa); Victor LaValle (Kampala, Uganda); Alain Mabanckou (Lagos, Nigeria); Nimco Mahamud Hassan (Khartoum, Sudan); Akenji Ndumu (Abidjan, Ivory Coast); Yvonne Owuor (Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo); Nicole Turner (Nairobi, Kenya); Abdourahman A. Waberi (Salvador, Brazil); and Binyavanga Wainaina (Touba, Senegal).

ALICIA KEYS AND SWIZZ BEATS GET TRADITIONAL BLESSING IN SOUTH AFRICA

Alicia Keys had her unborn child blessed in a traditional Zulu ceremony while in South Africa for the World Cup.
The Grammy award-winning singer, who is around five months pregnant, joined hands with music producer fiancé Swizz Beatz for the outdoor blessing near Durban, on the country's eastern coast, Daily Mail reports.
'Two female priests who practise a mix of Christianity and tribal customs chose new names for her and the unborn child, as a mark of respect. The names were kept between them, but were chosen to reflect Alicia's character.

'Alicia had to do a special dance with drums banging in the background, and was embraced by abused children who she has helped. She was chosen for the ceremony as a thank-you, because she has done a lot to keep children's lives afloat and for us to afford our support staff.
'Her partner came too - he held her hand and helped her sit down when she needed rest.'
Alicia's mother and brother were among a crowd of around 50 people who watched her by the tree where Bobbi Bear runs a weekly HIV clinic.

MARIGA OPENS INVESTMENT ACCOUNT

Last week, Kenya’s football darling, MacDonald Mariga opened an account with the Bank Of Africa. We are reliably informed it’s an Investment account.
Contrary to what most people may think, Mariga has a smart head on his shoulders and is no spendthrift.
Yes, he bought a crimson red Hummer straight out of the showroom and is known from treating his boys to a night out to the tune of over Sh70,000, but Mariga also invests his money.
Our spies may have told us it’s an Investment account, but they also prudently left out how much will be or has already been deposited into the account.
Meanwhile, Mariga also offered the MD of the Bank Kwame Ahadzi his number 17, Inter Millan jersey.
