KENYAN WINS US DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION

Juliet Torome beat other super talented filmmakers to win the CineSource's first annual Flaherty Documentary Contest in August and featured on the front page of the magazine.
Juliet, 25, wrote a winning proposal for a webdoc (web documentary) where she wants to look at Oakland, California through an African’s eyes.
“Hundreds of contestants applied, all from the US especially from the Bay Area, which is the third biggest film industry in the US after Hollywood. The contest was very competitive and people wrote very good proposals and I’m thrilled to have emerged the winner.”
With a budget of Sh360, 000 for the three-day shoot, Juliet is rearing to go.
“The prize includes hiring a professional camera, sound person, videographer and editor. I will direct the film as well as do the interviews to cut down on the cost of additional crew.
Juliet is also this month’s cover girl on CineSource, a monthly American magazine that reports on all things cinema.
“Yes, I was featured on the front page of the magazine, it specializes on filmmakers only. It is a very popular magazine in California because this is where a lot of filmmakers are based,” said an excited Juliet.

FORMER STAR REPORTER CAUSING WAVES ON AMERICAN TV

Juliet Torome a former reporter with the Star (fastest growing newspaper in Kenya) caused a stir in the US after her documentary on African male circumcision was aired on an American TV channel.
Juliet’s documentary on male circumcision was shot in Uganda. It follows the rites the young boys go through during their initiation.
“I shot it as a by the way, I was in Uganda doing research on farmers and I happened upon the ritual,” said Torome.
The documentary was aired early this month on KMTP-TV channel 32, a non-commercial television station in San Francisco, California. This follows a lot of interest expressed by viewers who watched the documentary on YouTube.
“Male Circumcision is a hot topic here. The reception was very good because not only was the documentary interesting to watch because of the circumcision rituals, it was also informative,” said an excited Juliet.
